Behind the wheel but not in control
Teachers at the Wichita Seed to STEM workshop had the chance to ride in a self-driving tractor. Brian Nelson of Hadley Middle School found it to be a really exciting opportunity: “Living in the city my whole life, I have had very few farm experiences. I enjoyed riding in the tractor and seeing all the advanced technology farming now has. I was amazed to sit there and watch the tractor drive itself. This was a good thing because it kept me from crashing this valuable piece of equipment!”
Nelson added that he might never have another chance to ride in a tractor, “and I am incredibly grateful for this chance of a lifetime.”
This activity is an example of the way Seed to STEM connects the classroom to modern agriculture. Teachers learn about the latest developments in farming and also about career possibilities in ag-related industries.
